I made this interesting towel rack in 1998. The frame is one continuous piece with leaves on either end.  Both the towel bar and the cross members on the shelf were split on the ends, the ends were forged to a "T" shape, and then the arms of the "T" were wrapped around the frame to make a firm connection. This type of connection has a very unique claw like appearance.
