The bolts on these locks are spring-loaded and the keys are turned counterclockwise to draw the bolt back to allow the shackles to open. One of the keys has a female thread and the other has a male thread (their counterparts are inside the locks).  The male threads are filed on and the female threads are made by wrapping a wire around the male thread that is then brazed into a tube. I believe these locks are from the 18th-19th century. They are made of iron with primarily brazed construction.
